Why Wind?

Climate change is one of the main challenges facing mankind in the 21st century. It is now widely recognised that the causes of climate change are linked to human activities, particularly to the burning fossil fuels and the greenhouse gases they emit.

Wind is an abundant source of renewable energy and it is also the world's fastest growing energy source. In the UK , thanks to our climate and position, we are fortunate to have around 40% of Europe 's wind resources.

Large-scale wind turbine technology is now well proven and this same technology is now being applied to smaller affordable devices enabling households and businesses to take on their own renewable production.

The electricity produced by a wind turbine over a year depends critically on the annual mean wind speed that the turbine experiences. Higher wind speeds produce significantly more energy (for the technically minded - power output increases with the cube of the wind speed). Given this turbines produce twice the amount of power in the winter months as they do in the summer.

The location of a turbine is critical for sensible power outputs. The best site for a turbine is in windy part of the UK , on a smooth and exposed hill top or rise and clear of any obstructions within a few hundred metres. Even then it is advisable to put your turbine on a mast above 10 metres to clear it from the effect of the ground.
